Methods of curing concrete
Concrete curing means the procedure of retaining humidity and temperature of newly arranged concrete throughout some specific time period on completion of placing, casting or finishing to ensure the passable hydration of cement & perfect solidification of the concrete.
So, proper care should be taken for curing of concrete otherwise the of concrete is significantly affected.
The methods are used for curing :-
- Water curing
- Utilization of heat
- Membrane curing
- Stem curing
Water Curing
It is the most suitable method of curing since it fulfill all the needs of curing which range from promotion of hydration, removal of shrinkage and ingestion of heat of hydration.
It is recommended that a specific amount of water curing should be performed prior to cover concrete with membrane.
Membrane Curing
Often, concrete work is performed at a place where sufficient water is not available. So, it becomes difficult to use ample water in curing. Curing also signifies to produce incessant & successive hydration.
Utilization of heat curing
The formation of strength in concrete is dependent on temperature. If the concrete has to undergo extreme temperature, it speeds up the hydration procedure that leads to quick formation of strength. The concrete can't be exposed to dry heat for faster hydration process since existence of moisture is also vital in concrete.
Stem Curing at ordinary pressure
This method is extensively implemented with prefabricated concrete components. But the use of stem cuing in situ concrete is very complicated. Though at some areas it can be employed with the help of thick polyethylene sheets.

Extent of curing
Ensure that concrete should not become dry quickly in any conditions. This conditions should be retained for 24 hours. The best suitable method is to retain the concrete in gunny bags for 24 hours and then start water curing by ponding or sprinkling method. If the concrete is cured for a prolonged period, the concrete attains good strength & other superior properties. The curing period differs for several structures, situation & atmospheric temperature. Normally, the concrete is cured for 7 days.
