Some vital technical terms in construction site
In this construction video tutorial, you will be familiar with some technical terms which play an important role in the construction site.
The desired angle of hooks for stirrup – The stirrups are essential parts of the column to tie up bars. The stirrups come with different angles. The recommended angles provided for stirrups should vary from 90 degree to 135 degree. 90 degree bent for stirrup is seldom used as it does not have enough strength to resist earthquake or lateral forces. So, 135 degree bent is mostly recommended.
Minimum longitudinal bar in column – This type of bar is provided in the middle portion of a column. For square or rectangular column, there should be 4 numbers longitudinal bars. For circular columns, there should be 6 numbers longitudinal bars.
The angle of hook provided at the end of longitudinal bar – In a column, in top portion, there is slab and in lower portion, there is footing. So, the longitudinal toward footing should be bent as 90 degree. The bar should merged on top by providing 90 degree bend.
No lapping provided for bar - If the diameter of the bar is in excess of 36 mm, the lapping should not be provided there. Lapping is provide to transmit the stress from one bar to another. So, for 36 mm diameter bar, it will be difficult to transmit the stresses due to larger diameter. Besides, the continuity of the bars will also be hampered.

Lapping in the compression zone – In a beam, the zone in lower portion is tension and the zone in upper portion is compression. The middle portion is neutral. The lapping in compression zone should 24d. Here, d stands for diameter of the bar.
Binding wire necessary in every one ton – Binding wire is required to tie rebars. In 1 ton steel bars, 7 kg to 13 kg binding wires are required.
Maximum lapping in same place – It should not be in excess of 50%. In a column, lapping is provided in middle zone.
The length of hooks in the stirrups – The hook is provided in 90 degree or 135 degree angle and the length of hook should be minimum 3 inches or 10d. Here, d stands for diameter of the bars.
Lapping in tension zone – In beam, lapping in tension zone should be 50d or 60d etc. But it also depends on the suggestions of the designers.
